Each Wednesday I have the opportunity to serve in a community called Carver Gardens in Gainesville, Florida. The people in this community make me want to serve others in a way I never have before. As a team, we meet about a hour before each meeting in Carver to pray and remind ourselves of the purpose behind why we are there. Today I want to focus on the foundation and the commitment behind serving in Carver. We call them “The 4 P’s,” which includes prayer, preparation, presence and purpose.
The main commitment of serving in Carver comes with prayer, and each team member is committed to praying about 10 minutes a day, or a little over an hour a week. Prayer is the most vital piece of serving and allows our team to be prepare our hearts for Carver Gardens.
In the Carver community we put on kids church each week, which includes a Bible story and worship. The group in charge of kids church must spend at least an hour in preparation for the week ahead.
As a team we want to ensure consistency in attending kids church every week, going to team meetings and events, going to the neighborhood and be involved in the community. Each individual is assigned to a CI (connecting intentionally) family and should be spending an hour a week with them. This can include eating lunch with kids at school, taking them to church and visiting them in the neighborhood.
We have a big purpose in the Carver community and we must be mindful of this purpose. As a team we must be intentional with the community and recognize that our purpose is to serve others, because while we serve others we are serving Jesus.
