Missions are not bound to a certain age, person or place. People of all ages have the ability to serve others. Some of the coolest stories I’ve been able to hear are those from the millennial age. Today I want to share the story of a sweet friend, Katie Wray, who has a heart for serving others.
The following is an interview with Katie Wray, a sophomore at the University of Florida, studying business management and economics.
What comes to mind when you hear the word “serving”?
Serving to me means putting others before yourself.
Where/when have you served on a mission trip?
I have served on a mission trip every year since my sophomore year of high school! I have been lucky enough to get to go to Costa Rica, Guatemala and Paraguay!
What was that experience like for you?
The experience was something that I can truly not put into words. On my first trip I gained such a world view and a new love for the Lord. I was so amazed by how different people worship God so differently, and for the first time SO many things made sense. God wanted an intimate relationship with me and I craved to know Him more than ever before!
Did you always know you wanted to go on a mission trip?
No, I did not always know I wanted to go on a mission trip. I actually went on my first one because I was terrified to go. I was a young Christian and I felt then Lord nudging me to do it. I wanted to cancel it the night before but I knew He had something big to tell me that week!
What is the biggest lesson you were able to gain from serving on a mission trip?
The biggest lesson that I was able to gain was the idea of rest. America sucks at rest. We think that there is no time for it and I am such a victim of this! The people I met and the culture I experienced showed me what it means to truly rest in the Lord’s presence.
It also taught me that (as cliche as it sounds) faith is not a feeling! Even when I wasn’t as emotional as those around me experiencing a culture shock for the first time, I knew God was working.
